Second Place SAE Competition & Best 1st Year Team
Caroline Sorensen, Eric Wilcox, Eric Wardell, Gary Ellingson, Jordan Huey, Jordan Furness, Trevor Crapo
As the second team to compete from BYU, the 2013 team focused on improving four aspects of the 2012 design: engine efficiency, rolling resistance, total weight, and driver safety. The resulting vehicle runs on a high-compression ratio engine driven by the Miller cycle, weighs 99 lbs. (23 lbs. less than last year), has a 20% lower coefficient of rolling friction, and has vastly improved visibility. All of these improvements contribute to the vehicle’s 1300 miles per gallon fuel economy, with a projected 1800 mpg fuel-economy under ideal conditions.
